The Refuge

A field hospital.

The Refuge is a field hospital. It exists to reach the person nobody else has been able to reach, at the moment nothing else has held.

It asks one thing of whoever walks in. A desire to be restored. Not right belief. Not having it together. Only the desire to be made whole.

Designed in full. Being stood up now.

A refuge, not a courtroom. A hospital, not a performance hall where you have to already be well to be welcome.

Book Three, The Entheos Project

Who belongs

Broken is the qualification, not the disqualification.

It believes the hardest thing of all, the thing that separates a refuge from a country club, that the sicker a person is, the more they belong there, because a hospital that only admits the healthy has forgotten what it is for.

It cannot shame the sick, because it does not believe the sickness is who they are. It cannot turn away the broken, because it believes broken is the qualification, not the disqualification.

A room that believes people are broken sorts them into the fixable and the hopeless. A room that believes people are buried has no hopeless category at all.

It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Mark 2:17 (NIV)
Two jobs

The field hospital, and the congregation.

Two things do two different jobs. Neither is complete without the other.

A field hospital is not a place anybody lives. You stabilize a person and then he needs somewhere to go.

The field hospital

Goes out and gets him.

The congregation

Receives him and holds him.

Your church is where he goes. Forty years of Sundays. A marriage that holds. A place his children grow up. People who will still be there when he is sixty. A field hospital cannot give any of that.

For churches

What a church gives, and what it receives.

You do what you do best. We handle the rest.

You are not asked to become anything. You are asked to keep being what you are, with the rest of it handled.

You do not become a clinic. You do not host one. You are not asked to counsel anybody, diagnose anybody, or treat anybody.

What a church gives

Receives him. Nothing conditional. He does not have to be better first.

Sits with him. Learns his name. Does not send him away.

Keeps holding him. Keeps him in the body.

Does what a church does. Sunday. A meal. A person who checks.

Still there. That is the whole contribution and it is the largest one.

Every one of those is something your church already does.

What a church receives

The education, already written, tailored to your church.

Evaluation and strengthening of the work you already do.

The symbol of connection. Public recognition that your church is connected to the architecture and held to its standard.

Your people stop carrying what they were never trained to carry.

What your church does for a person becomes visible.

The honest answer today is a story. After the record exists, the honest answer is a number. The story behind it.

What a church is never asked

A church is never charged.

Doctrine is the church’s own. It is never reviewed, approved, or conditioned.

Connection acquires no ownership of anything, at any point, in any form.

A church may end a connection at any time. What was taught remains theirs.

What would your church look like if the sickest person in the county walked in on Sunday, told the whole truth, and stayed?

The Creed

We are here to be restored.

We are not broken. We are buried.
We are here to be restored.

We believe no one is beyond the reach of God.
Where we cannot reach out, grace reaches in.

We walk with. We do not walk in front.

We believe the church is a place of refuge:
where the buried find healing,
the outcast finds belonging,
and the wounded find restoration.
We will not turn away the ones we were sent to receive.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5 (ESV)
Where it stands

Among the first.

A church that connects now is not joining something already running. It is among the first.

Say only what is true. Aim every word at restoration. Claim nothing that has not been built.

A church cannot be everything. It was never asked to be. It was asked to be a refuge. That is the oldest job it has, and it is the one nobody else in this country is positioned to do.
